Walter Hilgers received his musical education in the subjects of tuba, contrabass and piano. Engagements as a tuba player with, amongst others, the Philharmonic State Orchestra and the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg as well as with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, soon followed. In addition, Walter Hilgers was also part of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra for 12 years and was a founding member of the Ensemble German Brass, where he spent 25 years.
Between 1989 and 1995 he worked as a professor at the College of Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg, after which he was appointed Professor of Wind Chamber Music at the Franz Liszt College of Music in Weimar. To this day, he also directs the main class for the tuba here.
In the 30 years of his active orchestral career, this exceptional artist has played music under the likes of Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Georg Solti, Günter Wand and lots of others.
Working with such outstanding figures has had a significant impact on conductor Walter Hilgers. His being awarded a prize for best participant at the International Conductors Worksop in Košice, Slovakia in 1995 signalled the beginning of an intensive collaboration with the Košice State Philharmonic Orchestra that has lasted for many years. Guest conductorships have since brought him to the conductor's stand of numerous orchestras in Germany and abroad. In recent years, for example, he has been a regular guest at the Radio Symphony Orchestra and Radio Chamber Orchestra in Bucharest, the State Philharmonic Orchestras in Timişoara and Sibiu as well as at the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice.
Other conducting engagements have taken him to the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra in Buenos Aires as well as to the conductor’s podium of the Brandenburg State Orchestra in Frankfurt (Oder) and the Munich Radio Orchestra in Germany.
Since the start of the 2007/08 season, Walter Hilgers has been Principal Guest Conductor at the State Philharmonic Orchestra in Timişoara, Romania.
